Marzen’s Story: How a Long-Ignored Dog Found Their Forever Home
Sometimes puppy love shows up late — but when it does, it sticks.

Despite being a large dog, Marzen never made a big first impression on potential adopters. Her black coat, graying muzzle, and floppy ears didn’t stand out from the crowd. And her withdrawn disposition added to this invisibility.
Marzen was brought into this small Texas shelter after being discovered alone. She lingered there longer than anyone expected. “Marzen was found wandering as a stray,” Charlotte Nolan, Adoption Program Manager at Animal Friends Alliance, says, “and for far too long, her original shelter pleaded for a rescue placement.”
That changed when Animal Friends Alliance (AFA) traveled to Texas and spotted her in the shelter. During that visit, they pulled as many dogs as they could transport, including Marzen, who was long overdue for a fresh start.
“When we first met Marzen, we immediately fell in love with her gentle spirit, despite everything she had endured,” Nolan says. “She seemed a bit shut down, but we knew that with the right environment, she would blossom into an incredibly loyal and loving companion.”
After being transferred to AFA, Marzen started the hard work of learning how to trust. Little by little, her sweet nature began to surface. As her personality opened up, the next step was to determine her breed lineage — essential details that encourage many adoptions. So the AFA gave her a Wisdom Panel™ DNA test thanks to a partnership with Adopt a Pet, which helps shelters and rescues boost pet adoptions.

The DNA testing filled in the blanks of what adopters couldn’t simply “see” when looking at Marzen in a kennel: With 56 percent Great Dane ancestry, she is a true gentle giant. (Marzen also has strong Doberman Pinscher roots and smaller traces of Plott Hound, Rottweiler, and American Pit Bull Terrier.) Although breed can be a smaller predictor of behavior, the results really explained her size, softness, and slow-burning affection. The testing didn’t change who Marzen was, but it helped folks better understand her.

Today, Marzen is thriving after being adopted by one of Animal Friends Alliance’s own volunteers who developed a deep connection with her. This pup’s story reminds us that the best matches aren’t always instant (like a spark) or cinematic (like the dog who beelines to you with a wagging tail). Sometimes real love comes later, in the form of a once-invisible dog quietly waiting for someone to truly see them.
Adopt a Pet has partnered with Wisdom Panel™ to provide clearer insight into the background and breeds of pets at shelters and rescues, helping adoptable pets find homes faster. Through this program, animal welfare organizations with an Adopt a Pet account can order Wisdom Panel Breed Discovery tests at a deep discount, making DNA testing more affordable and helping them market and match harder-to-adopt pets with the right home. If your organization has an Adopt a Pet account, learn more about the program and complete the interest form to participate.

Adopt a Pet connects hopeful pet parents with shelters, rescues, and rehomers — so more adoptable pets can find their people. Ready to adopt a pet? Kick off your pet adoption search right here.
