Finding a dog to adopt is relatively simple. After all, shelters and rescues are full of wonderful pups looking for homes. But finding a dog who fits seamlessly into your family? That takes a little more thought.
If you have children, another dog, or a cat, compatibility with your family members — both two- and four-legged — is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a dog to adopt.
Fortunately, many shelter and rescue dogs have already shown they’re all about family life. Some love hanging out with kids. Others enjoy canine playmates, or have lived peacefully alongside cats.
Below, meet four adoptable dogs at Middleburg Humane Foundation in Marshall, Virginia. Could one of these family-oriented pups be the newest addition to your crew?

Middleburg Humane Foundation
The basics: Male, Hound mix, 8 years old, 74 pounds, neutered
All about Albert: Albert is the kind of dog who makes life feel more relaxed and enjoyable. A leisurely walk followed by an evening on the couch is his idea of a perfect day.
Already housetrained, crate trained, and polite on a leash, this sweet gentleman is an easy addition to many households. He gets along wonderfully with kids, other dogs, and cats. In fact, he genuinely seems to enjoy the company of other animals.
As long as he’s spending time with his favorite people and furry friends, this easygoing Hound mix is one happy pup.
Albert is currently undergoing treatment for heartworms. While that may sound intimidating, heartworm is highly treatable, and the shelter can answer any questions you have about his care and recovery.
Give this good boy a chance, and you’ll be rewarded with one of the gentlest, kindest companions you could ask for.

Even if your new dog has done well with children or other pets in the past, every new home is different. It can take time for everyone to settle in and get to know one another. Here are a few tips to help your family start off on the right paw:
Introduce pets gradually. Introduce resident dogs and cats to your new dog gradually, and give your new dog their own space to eat, sleep, and decompress as they adjust.
Teach children respectful interactions. Show kids how to pet gently, respect the dog’s boundaries, and recognize when they need space.
Supervise early interactions. Young children and dogs should never be left together unsupervised. Keeping a close eye on them during the first few weeks helps build a safe, positive relationship.
Make sure everyone’s on the same page. Decide on household rules from the start, such as where your dog is allowed to sleep, when they eat, and how you’ll reward good behavior. Consistency helps dogs settle in more quickly and learn what’s expected of them.
If these pups aren’t quite the right fit, you can find plenty of other wonderful dogs available through Middleburg Humane Foundation and other shelters, rescues, and individual homes across the country.
