International Cat Day, celebrated every August 8, is about appreciating all things cats, from the companionship they offer to their silly antics (we’re looking at you, 3 a.m. zoomies). It’s also a reminder that millions of cats in shelters and rescues around the world are hoping to find loving homes through adoption.
At Fat Kitty City, a limited-admission shelter in El Dorado Hills, California, every cat is guaranteed a safe place to stay for as long as they need. While they’ll always have a roof over their heads and people who care for them, nothing compares to having humans and a home to call their own.
Here are three felines hoping this International Cat Day is the start of their next chapter.

Fat Kitty City Humane Society
The basics: Male, Domestic Shorthair, 7 years old, neutered
All about Thomas: With his movie-star good looks and easygoing personality, it’s no surprise Thomas is a favorite among the staff and volunteers at Fat Kitty City.
Although he was originally expected to remain at the sanctuary permanently, it soon became clear that life in a large group of cats wasn’t making him happy. Thomas dreams of a peaceful home where he can rule the roost and not have to worry about other cats stealing his favorite napping spots.
At the sanctuary, you’ll often find Thomas making his rounds, stopping to say hello to his favorite humans and following staff around like their charming supervisor.
Thomas enjoys attention, but he’s not demanding. Give him a few head scratches, a little conversation, and a comfortable place to relax, and in return you’ll get loyal companionship and a very handsome best friend who will undoubtedly elevate your life.

Fat Kitty City Humane Society
The basics: Female, Domestic Mediumhair, 1 year old, spayed
All about Tigress: Tigress never quite got the hang of being a stray. She reportedly greeted anyone who crossed her path and repeatedly tried to invite herself into people’s homes to escape the harsh winter weather. When neighborhood cats began picking fights with her, it became clear she needed a safer place to land.
Covered in fleas and ticks, Tigress was rescued and brought into foster care through Fat Kitty City. Not long afterward, she surprised everyone by giving birth to a litter of kittens.
Tigress proved to be a devoted, loving mom, raising her babies until they were ready for homes of their own. Now that all of her babies have found families, she’s patiently waiting for her turn.
This affectionate young cat adores people and never says no to extra attention. While she gets along fine with other cats, she’d much rather be the star of the show in a single-cat household.
After life as a stray and raising a litter of kittens, this beautiful girl is ready to be the one soaking up all the love and attention.

Fat Kitty City Humane Society
The basics: Female, Domestic Shorthair, 8 years old, spayed
All about Lexi: Lexi spent her entire life as an indoor cat alongside her sister, who she was deeply bonded. After losing her sister and the home she’d always known, she’s adjusting to life at the shelter and hoping to find a new family.
Lexi is a gentle, reserved cat who takes a little time to warm up. But once she trusts you, she blossoms, especially when she’s getting pets or being talked to in that classic high-pitched “kitty voice.”
While many of the cats at Fat Kitty City enjoy exploring the rescue’s secure outdoor spaces, Lexi is an indoor cat through and through. Give her plenty of attention and a few cozy spots indoors, and she’ll be perfectly content.
If you’re looking for a calm, loyal companion who loves the comforts of indoor life, Lexi just might be your girl.

Still searching for your match?
If these cats have already been adopted by the time you’re reading this, or aren’t quite the right fit, you’ll find plenty of other wonderful cats available through Fat Kitty City and other shelters, rescues, and individual homes across the country.
