For years, Chance, an orange-and-white Domestic Shorthair cat, appeared to be one of the many community cats living outdoors in a Las Vegas neighborhood. Fortunately, a kind family took notice of her and regularly made sure she had food and water.
But Chance hadn’t always lived on the streets. The now-six-year-old cat had once had a home of her own, until a house fire changed everything. Chance escaped the fire but became separated from her family and spent the next five years surviving outdoors.
Eventually, Lady Luck came through for Chance, and she landed at Homeward Bound Cat Adoptions in Las Vegas. Now healthy and safe, this sweet survivor is ready to leave outdoor life behind for good and find a permanent home.
By adopting a cat like Chance, you’ll not only be gaining an incredible feline bestie, but also freeing up much-needed rescue resources and space so another cat in need can get help.
Here’s a closer look at Chance’s story and why her future adopter will be getting one seriously special cat.
In the five years since the house fire, Chance had been living outside in Las Vegas, where she faced scorching summer heat, chilly winter nights, and all the other risks that come with living outside.
She had managed to survive, thanks in large part to the family who had fed and looked out for her for years. But then Chance suffered another loss. The family caring for her experienced a tragedy of their own and could no longer provide for her.
That’s when Chance was brought to Homeward Bound Cat Adoptions.
By the time Chance was finally brought to safety, she had severe dental disease that was causing her pain. Her coat was also badly matted.
With the help of the rescue’s veterinary partners, Chance received the dental treatment she needed to get her mouth healthy. Her matted fur also had to be shaved in places, resulting in a rather unfortunate haircut.
The treatment may not have been much fun for Chance, but she’s now pain-free and feeling so much better. As for the unfortunate haircut? Thankfully, bad haircuts are temporary, and Chance’s beautiful locks are already growing back.

Once Chance was comfortable and feeling better, the folks at Homeward Bound Cat Adoptions got to see more of her personality. And as it turns out, she’s a total sweetheart.
Chance can be a bit of an introvert at first and may need some time to warm up to new people. Once she trusts you, though, she’s all about affection. She loves lap time, cuddles, and simply being close to her favorite humans.
She has plenty to say, too. Chance communicates with a raspy little meow that is simply adorable.
Perhaps most remarkable is that five years outdoors didn’t diminish Chance’s trust in people or cause her to shut down. She still seeks out affection and clearly wants to bond with people.
Chance spent her early life as an indoor cat, and it seems she’s happy to be back inside where she belongs. Additionally, Chance is listed as good with other cats, so she may be a fit for a home that already has a feline family member.
After escaping a house fire and fending for herself outside for years, Chance has already proven she’s a very resilient cat. Now, thanks to the people who stepped up to help her, she can officially put survival mode behind her.
At six years old, Chance would be an excellent companion for someone looking for a calmer cat who still has plenty of pep in her step and life ahead of her. She’s sweet, affectionate, litter-box trained, and more than happy to embrace the indoor-cat lifestyle.
After everything Chance has been through, she’s ready for a much simpler life: cozy beds, full bowls, plenty of lap time, and the security of knowing she’s finally home.
